Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova or Kosovė, Serbian: ??????, Kosovo, Turkish: Kosova) is a territory in southeastern Europe internationally recognized as part of Serbia. After international negotiations failed to reach a consensus on an acceptable constitutional status, Kosovo's provisional government unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. The Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovės, Serbian: ????????? ??????, Republika Kosovo) is anticipated to receive partial international recognition as an independent country. The Serbian government regards the territory as an integral part of Serbia, the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbian: ????????? ????????? ?????? ? ????????, Autonomna pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija, also ??????, Kosmet; Albanian: Krahina Autonome e Kosovės dhe Metohisė).
In addition to its frontier with what Serbia considers to be the remainder of the Serbian state, Kosovo borders Montenegro, Albania, and the Republic of Macedonia. It has a population of just over two million people, predominantly ethnic Albanians, with smaller populations of Turks, Serbs, Romani people, Goranis, Bosniaks and other ethnic communities. Pritina is the capital and largest city.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of the year 1999 placed Kosovo under the authority of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), with security provided by the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR). Although the Resolution legally affirmed Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo, in practice Serbian governance in the province has been virtually non-existent since then. UNMIK's role in Kosovo is in the process of being supplanted by EULEX, a European Union body.
